Henri Matisse, The Snail, 1953 Henri Matisse was a pioneering French artist and a leading figure in modern art, known for making colourful works of art. Matisse developed his famous cutout technique in the late 1930s, and The Snail from 1953 is one of his bestknown works. He arranged painted paper shapes into a spiral, using bold colours to create a striking, vibrant artwork.
